Introduction

My name is Michael O’Kane and I have been a teacher in New York since 1987. I have a Master’s degree from Saint John’s University, have taught various grade levels during my career, and have served both as an assistant principal and principal. This is my second year at Blessed Sacrament and am teaching Grades 5-8 Social Studies. I am really looking forward to a very productive school year. I am originally from Derry in the North of Ireland. I came to NY in 1987 for a visit and never went home. I am an avid football (soccer) fan and support Liverpool FC. I am looking forward to meeting, as well as knowing each of my students, and am extremely excited for the many educational, fun and rewarding experiences that we will encounter and strive for this upcoming year.

Grading Policy

All students will start each quarter with 100% in both Classwork and Homework. 5% will be deducted from the Homework grade each time a homework is missed. 5% will also be deducted from the Classwork grade if the student is not prepared for and/or does not do the classwork. Below are the overall percentages:

Quizzes 20%

Classwork/Participation 40%

Homework 10%

Homework Policy

Homework for Social Studies will be mostly reading and reviewing for tests/quizzes. Our main work will be done during class time.

Class Schedule

Grade 5: Mon/Tues/Thurs/Fri – 8:20-9:00. Also, Wed – 9:00-9:40 and Fri – 1:50-2:30

Grade 6: Mon/Tues/Thurs/Fri – 9:00-9:40. Also, Wed – 1:50-2:30

Grade 7: Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs/Fri – 11:10-11:50. Also, Thurs – 1:10-1:50

Grade 8: Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs/Fri – 9:40-10:20
